Still a student, or just committed to cutting down on consumption? You've probably heard of freecycle, which has a thriving Amsterdam-based community (of mostly expats). It's a great service that allows people to get rid of unwanted things without throwing them in the trash - but also lets people looking for an old sofa, vacuum cleaner, bicycle etc. pick something up for free.

Well, this week I found the Dutch version: gratisoptehalen.nl. Translated as "free to pick up," this site basically follows the same concept of freecycle, except it's in Dutch! On the home page they have a wide variety of item categories under offered (aangeboden) and wanted (gezocht). You'll need to register to use the site, but that's a small price to pay for the gems I've seen advertised. Plus, it's good practice for your Dutch (or your use of Google Translate).
