As I rode my bike passed what has been, for over 5 years, a construction site on the Marnixstraat near Leidseplein, I noticed the building was completed and some people were putting the finishing touches on the sign outside: Delamar Theater.
On a site where there has been theater performances since the mid 1800's, the Delamar Theater has finally been completed and opened its doors this month. Housing 2 theaters, one with 939 seats and the other with room for 601, the Delamar will be a place for Broadway musicals, plays, and other spectaculars.
They've started their new era with a musical "La Cage aux Folles", a musical (in Dutch) by Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein, based on the original play by Jean Poiret. English language audiences may recognize it by its later incarnation "Bird Cage". "La Cage Aux Folles" will be playing at the beautiful Delamar from now until February 13, 2011. Tickets and schedule are all available on their website.
