If you've been in Utrecht recently, you've probably seen some of the huge signs and banners announcing the annual Smartlappen Festival. Held the third week in November every year, this musical festival is certainly something to experience.
Smartlappen, which translates to tearjerker, refers to some of the styles of songs performed. Yet it's not all sadness and misery. Quite the opposite! There's a lot of singing along to old (Dutch) favorites, and a surprising amount of humor and joy, along with the odd costume. Even if you don't know the words, you're bound to get caught up in the camaraderie and spirit of the evening.
The festival begins Friday, November 20, and runs through Sunday, November 22. More than 30 bars and cafés across Utrecht are taking part in the festival, and entrance is free. For the full list of locations, performers and times, check out the program on the festival's website, or stop in any of the bars where you see the banner outside and pick up a free copy of the program.
