This weekend a special edition of Utrecht's monthly Cultural Sunday will be taking place. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Niemandsland (No Man's Land) will take a look at the borders that still exist today, the results of the breaking of borders, and those ambiguous areas in between, along with a look at the literal achievements made in Germany after the fall.
The events start on Saturday evening at the Cathedral square with a look at various elements of Berlin's culture and history. There will be a special presentation of Cees Nooteboom's Berlin Notes, as you have a chance to relive the events which lead to that historic night in 1989. Saturday evening will also see a series of music and film presentations highlighting the influential German music scene with everything from polka to techo.
Sunday, there will be a variety of presentations, including films, theater, music, lectures and interactive events, with Utrecht divided into three zones: West, Mitte, and Ost. Each zone will have representative displays and events, focusing on youth and subcultures, the fall of the wall, and the mingling of cultures, respectively. Many events will be taking place at City Hall, including a chance for people to leave messages on bricks that will make up a wall, which will be ceremonially torn down and then some of the messages will be delivered the Ministerial Council of Europe.
Events are taking place all over the city, at more than 35 locations, so it's best to check the official website for the full program. Many of the events will be in English or at least include English subtitles, so it's definitely worth checking out, even if your Dutch or German isn't so good. Relive an important part of history, or get a better understanding of this important moment in history.
