Little known but taking place all over Amsterdam, the Experimenta Design event is taking place from now until November 2nd.

I've heard reports from various friends involving moving trees which are planted in shopping carts, making shapes with hundreds of thousands of euro-cents, chiseling rock into the sculpture of your choice, and pimping your bike.

This even is so big, it is no wonder it goes for over a month, leaving me with enough time to enjoy some of the various installations located around town.

If you're not in-country, I recommend the photo report section on their website. If you are here I highly recommend choosing one of the many exhibitions or events. In addition if you're really looking to explore, there's a temporary hotel - Hotel Experimenta - where you can book a room. It is described as follows:

‘Hotel Experimenta’ is a temporary hotel with one room with a view. It can be seen as an inverted hotel – the neighbourhood as a whole functions as a hotel, the streets are the hotel corridors, and the inhabitants are the hosts that offer the guests services, activities and excursions. If you book a night at ‘Hotel Experimenta’ you sleep here and discover the surroundings. For breakfast, watching a movie, going to the sauna, having diner or engaging in activities like gardening, taking a boat trip or doing some creative work, you will need to get out and explore.

Most of the activities are free of charge and encourage you to participate in some way. A few of the talks and other exhibits do have a charge, consult the website section with prices for details.
