Have you ever visited a city, fell in love with it, and just wished, oh wished, that you had a best friend there (or even an old acquaintance!) who could show you around, take you to the secret places and local's favourites??
I pretty much always feel like this when in a new place. For that, I tend to choose places where if I do not have a friend, I know someone who has lived there to give me some insider tips. Nothing worse than feeling like a tourist, agreed?
Here's someone who can help: Like a Local in Amsterdam. Like a Local will set you up in a houseboat, out for a drink or even over to someone's house for a home-cooked dinner!
Along with Amsterdam, the website has people for you to meet (*This is NOT a dating service!!!) in Portugal, New York City and others. It also allows you to meet new people in other Dutch cities like Rotterdam.
You can choose between 3 options: Live!, Go! and Eat! for accommodation, nightlife, or in-house dining. A real, live and friendly Dutch person will make you feel like a local. What could be better?

I am staying at a flat in Westerpark. Anyone know of any good coffeeshops in the area, pubs, places to get groceries? Basically I would appreciate any advice. I have been to Amsterdam before and really dont want to do all the tourist stuff.

First to Claire -- you want bars without tourists then the secret is to just walk further than most people are willing to. Or just head east of central station.. keep walking.. or take any tram to the end of the line. there you will find regular neighborhoods. no tourists. houseboat rentals... the kids like the craigslist amsterdam site.. though there's alot of spam on it. You'll at least find temp stays... maybe not houseboats.
Jake -- From Westerpark, you can walk down the Haarlemmerstraat for several blocks and frequent the award winning coffeeshop Barney's.. where they're also famous for their breakfast. Groceries youll notice people in your area going to one of several like Albert Heijn. dont worry to much about it.. they're all over. Also if you walk under the railroad tracks north of westerpark, great neighborhood lots of food stores and other things.. including simple coffeeshops.
