If you search back in the trippist archives, you'll surely find a few entries from our crew about how much we love the bakkerswinkel. Like a fairy tale bakery from an imaginary childhood we probably saw on television, Amsterdam's modest chain of very old school bakeries have long held a special place in our stomachs.
As I strolled Westerpark recently, I peeked into one of the old warehouses that I'd never checked out before. Surely there would be something interesting as Westerpark is bustling with hip and relaxed fun... every few months with something new popping up. I expected a hip club, maybe a café, or artists' studios. What I didn't expect was another in the series of irresistible and mind numbing goodness.
Indeed the Westerpark bakkerswinkel has probably been there for some time, I just never noticed. The fresh scones under glass, the black forest chocolate cake, the herbal teas in the environmentally responsible baggies... they've been there the whole time under my nose.. as I ran around throwing frisbees and drinking beers out on the green grass.
Don't make my mistake of taking so long to find it. Go to Westerpark and go to this particular bakkerswinkel.. it is not to be missed. Thankfull they're open everyday til 18h, with a later opening time (10am) on weekends.

Speaking of wonderful places for delicious food-items: My tip for you (now that the weather is getting colder) is "Esquinja". I'm leaving Amsterdam (after 7 years) next month and figure I better leave a few of my discoveries for others. Esquinja serves the most amazing chocolate brownies (the ones with a swirl of lemon riccotta are my favourite) and other chocolate goodies. They do a "Chocolate High Tea". Their shop is charming and it's located just around the corner from the Albert Cuypmarkt. Gerard Doustraat 224. They also make a wonderful traditional Mexican hot chocolate with a sprinkle of chilly. I could go on. Go and find out for yourself, the two lady owners are super-nice and their kitchen is open. You can even sit there at the table while they prepare stuff sometimes.
