Can you do this?

Riding a bike is a useful skill in Amsterdam. Now it's time to kick it up a notch. Answering your mobile phone, balancing multiple shopping bags, and most importantly, handling your umbrella. Although this may seem tricky, it is an important way of maintaining the ability to ride in even the harshest weather. Although, nothing is more embarrassing than when you're riding and the umbrella flips backwards- also dangerous! I suggest practicing in wide open spaces. Also be sure that you can open your umbrella mid-flight. And then- prepare yourself for tourists to take pictures of you, even if you are one yourself- you'll seem like a real local to them!

A dangerous trick and unnecessary if you use the http://www.happyhotelier.com/2007/05/24/dutch-design-9-drybike-umbrella-holder/ Dry Bike umbrella holder

Anneke:

Have you ever read the Volkskrant? They tried several of these holders, and what did they come up with? Umbrellaholders are dangerous, even more so than an umbrella by itself. These holders are not strong enough to hold when the wind blows, and they will either throw over the bike, or break the umbrella. Moreover they do not protect from the rain, when it falls sideways (and it always does). Holding an umbrella in your hand alows you to move it, so that you can shield yourself from the rain, and it won't flip or break, because you can hold it facing the wind. That being said, I like reading about bikes, and things people can pull off while riding it.
