Not too long ago, I wrote about the Keukenhof. Yesterday I finally visited, and it was a wonderful way to enjoy a holiday weekend! The park is large and lovely and full of immaculate flower gardens. Everything - including each blade of grass - is trimmed to perfection. The park is surrounded by bulb fields, so even from the fenced-in boundaries of the garden, visitors can see the beauty of the flowers extending into the distance.
It's best to avoid going by car (try to go by bike, as it's much easier to get in and out). It's also a treat to bike through the surrounding bulb fields, an experience best enjoyed on a bicycle. I'd also recommend visiting as close to opening time as possible (8 am) - by 10:30 or 11 the crowds have descended and it starts to feel a bit too much like an amusement park.

We visited Keukenhof when we were in Amsterdam a few years ago at Easter. We were able to buy a combined rail/bus transfer/entrance ticket at the train station in Amsterdam. Keukenhof was lovely but we had really awful weather for our stay, a lot of heavy rain and cold. It wasn't too busy at Keukenhof itself but it was pretty frantic trying to get on the bus for the transfer.

How long does it take to bike to the Keukenhof? I am living in Amsterdam and meeting family there and would love to bike but haven't done a long stretch like this in Holland yet so am a bit worried. Sounds exciting though. Thanks!

Hi Joe,
The distance to the Keukenhof from Amsterdam(Central Station) is around 37 km (23 miles) so quite a trip by bike! You can also rent a bike at the Keukenhof for a ride through the bulbfields in the surrounding area. Check out www.rent-a-bikevandam.nl for bike routes and more information. Enjoy!
